Acclaimed film, television, and stage director Mike Nichols passed away yesterday (November 19) at age 83. ABC News, who employs his third wife Diane Sawyer as an anchor, reported that he had a cardiac arrest.

Nichols is among the few to have achieved the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), first winning a Grammy for Best Comedy Album in 1962 with the recording of "An Evening with Mike Nichols and Elaine May" (they were a comedy double act for years coming up through Second City), then winning Best Direction of a Play Tonys for "Barefoot in the Park", "Luv", and "The Odd Couple" (all three he originated). He followed up with arguably his most memorable work winning an Oscar for directing The Graduate. It would not be until 2002 when he won an Emmy for directing the television film "Wit" and later the television mini-series adaptation of "Angels in America".

Nichols has also directed the films "Who is Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", "Catch-22", "The Birdcage", and his last feature was "Charlie Wilson's War". Other stage work include "Annie", "The Real Thing", and originating "Spamalot".

That's just terrible. RIP. :(
You can’t just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!

Great director, still working, with a wonderfully acerbic touch. But he had a fantastic career and we should all be grateful for the terrific films, shows and specials he gave us.

Indeed, what a career!

Oddly, I only finally watched The Graduate a few weeks ago.
